Abarca’s Sonymarie Socarrás recognized by Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)

We are excited to share that Sonymarie Socarrás, VP Strategy to Execution at Abarca, has been recognized with a 2020 Star Award from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).

This award honors the work that Sonymarie has done to create and lead the Introduction to Engineering course at Mater Salvatori’s high school in San Juan.

“At its core, this course is designed to teach the principles of going off road,” said Sonymarie. “The students I teach represent the future of engineering and technology, and they must receive early encouragement to get creative and use their curiosity to find a better way.”

SHPE is the nation’s largest association dedicated to fostering Hispanic leadership in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields. Their SHPE STAR Awards honor outstanding professionals across the United States for their dedication and commitment to advancing Hispanics in STEM careers. A reflection of her lasting impact, Sonymarie was nominated for this recognition by a former student.

Other recipients include outstanding professionals from companies like Raytheon Technologies, The Boeing Company, Verizon, Intel Corporation, and the Air Force Research Laboratory. The ceremonies will take place in two parts on Wednesday, October 28, and Thursday, October 29, 2020.

“It is an honor to be named among this year’s STAR Award recipients,” said Sonymarie. “But the feedback I receive from my students, and the sense of accomplishment they have found in my class is the greatest reward.”
